Community Art can be defined in many ways; sometimes referred to as community engagement art or community based art. It can take on many different forms depending on the participants, the perimeters of the collaboration and the ultimate goals of the project. It is as much about process as it is about the artistic product or outcome. It is not always easy to define as every project is unique.
Community art is an artistic activity that is based in a community setting. It is a collaborative process usually involving large or small groups of people, one or more community partners or organizations that can include different sectors such as education, health, redevelopment or social causes.
When planning a community project, it is important to envision the opportunities for cultural growth, realizing and solving problems by interacting and creating a dialogue within a community in order to gain a complete understanding of the geography and the history as well as particular community values, while respecting ethnic traditions, spirits and or beliefs.
Using the principles of public art, community planning, redevelopment and design, the goals can be neighborhood beautification, and also to help brand, market and bridge communities together. By creating a sense of belonging, it can rid municipalities of blithe, crime and instill a sense of pride. I have been involved in many community projects at all different levels. It has been an exciting journey and I plan to continue working on ventures of this magnitude, hoping to make a difference.
